With a history stretching back almost 200 years, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is the cornerstone of government’s work with one of our most important transport sectors. An Executive Agency sponsored by the Department for Transport (DfT), we work to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea, produce legislation and guidance on maritime matters, and provide certification to ships and seafarers. We also provide a 24/7 maritime search and rescue service around the UK coast, and international search and rescue, through HM Coastguard. We are the only UK-wide emergency services organisation, and our team of 1,000 staff and 3,500 volunteers makes a vital contribution to the UK’s economic wellbeing, public safety, and international reputation.
MCA has a long and distinguished past, but a dynamic and challenging present and future. As Sir Alan Massey stands down after a successful eight-year tenure as Chief Executive, the DfT and the MCA’s Chair and board are seeking to appoint his successor. With direct accountability to the Secretary of State for Transport and the Minister for Shipping, and reporting to DfT’s Director General, International, Security and Environment, the new Chief Executive will develop and promote the future strategic direction for the Agency. They will build trusting relationships with a wide range of stakeholders - including Ministers, DfT and wider government, international counterparts, and industry - while providing inspirational leadership to a nationally dispersed, 4,500-strong organisation.
We are looking for a talented senior leader with a track record projecting clear strategic vision across large, geographically dispersed, operational delivery teams to drive and deliver sustainable change. You are resilient, while also possessed of the judgement and ‘nous’ to navigate complex political and policy environments. Your sophisticated communication and influencing skills will help you gain and maintain the confidence of your stakeholders, whether those be in government or industry, driving up commercial performance and customer satisfaction through innovation and technology-enabled improvement. Experience of working in or closely with the maritime sector, and with or for government, are highly desirable, though not essential.
