From inspiring medical students starting out in medicine, speaking on the radio about pressures doctors face, to leading change to prevent harm and drive improvement for patients, you will join us at a critical point in relations with doctors and the four UK governments. Our new corporate strategy – an ambition for change, shifts the emphasis of our work from acting when things have gone wrong, to supporting all doctors to deliver the highest standards of care. This is the best way to keep both patients and doctors safe.
It’s a challenging time for the medical profession, and for how we regulate in a system under pressure, so your personal credibility, strong diplomatic skills and ability to command confidence with key interest groups will be core to your work for us.
We work hard to promote professionalism and a culture of learning. But learning and insight isn’t just for doctors - it applies to us too, and underpins everything we are doing to be a more active and proportionate regulator. We have already changed the game of regulation, pushing our outdated legislation to the limit in the last five years through being prepared to identify issues and engage with the profession so that we understand better the context in which they practise and the pressures they face.
Professor Sir Terence Stephenson will step down at the end of 2018, after serving for four years as Chair. His successor must have a demonstrable record of leadership in substantial roles and proven
chairing and board level experience.
