University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, rated as “Good” by the Care Quality Commission, is one of the largest teaching Trusts in the UK. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for the whole NHS. We have taken this opportunity to work together thinking differently and adapting our practices to enable services to continue running. Our workforce has achieved amazing things, including innovations in use of technology, developing new guidelines and practices, training in new skills and adapting clinical pathways. We boast some of the most modern facilities in Western Europe and are known for being at the forefront of research and innovation.
We are extremely proud of our skilled employees across our hospital sites in Coventry and Rugby, with high quality patient care positioned at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to delivering world class service to patients and have established and embedded the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle. We are also developing a strong record of research and innovation in a number of fields.
The Trust is governed by a unitary Board made up of Executive members including our Chief Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer and seven independent Non-Executive Directors (NEDs), including the Chair. The Board is responsible for the governance of the Trust including quality, safety, finance and performance.
We are recruiting to two newly established Associate Non-Executive roles in the Trust to further enhance the knowledge and expertise on our Board. These developmental roles are an opportunity for candidates who have an interest in working at Board level but may not yet have sufficient experience to undertake a full Non-Executive role. The role will offer you a range of opportunities, including:
• Experience of operating at Board level
• Exposure to working in a large complex NHS organisation
• Ability to transition from Associate to Non- Executive role within the NHS or other organisation/sector
• Developmental training, support and mentoring from highly experienced NHS leaders
• Opportunity to champion our local and diverse communities.
As part of the Board, you will contribute to the strategic direction, leadership, performance and governance of the organisation whilst actively promoting the Trust values and behaviours. You will participate in regular board and committee meetings and provide independent knowledge and expertise whilst constructively challenging views to support effective decision making. You will demonstrate commitment to the health and wellbeing of the local population and have an understanding of current issues within healthcare.
You will have gained experience in a leadership role within a small/medium or large organisation, demonstrating a good understanding of governance structures and the importance of public accountability and champion standards of public office.
Highly developed communication and influencing skills combined with the ability to engage with the complex issues facing the Trust and the broader health service are essential. Experience gained within an environment complementary to healthcare e.g. community, mental health, voluntary, social care or customer focussed private sector organisation is desirable. An understanding of Workforce and Organisational Development or ICT/Digital Technologies would also be helpful but is not essential.
We are committed to ensuring that we are able to reflect the diversity and views of our local communities in improving patient care and staff experience, and are specifically welcoming applicants who live within the Coventry and Warwickshire area to ensure that the local community are represented at Board level.
To recruit to these developmental roles and demonstrate our commitment to building a diverse board, we would encourage applicants from an African/African Caribbean background, disabled people and those from generation ‘Y’ (under 40 years) to apply as these groups are currently underrepresented at Board level.
To apply, please submit a covering letter and CV (detailing how you meet the role requirements within the role profile).
Closing date: Midnight on Monday 21 June 2021.
Pre - Assessment date: Monday 5 July & Wednesday 7 July 2021.
