JOB PURPOSE

1. Lead on the development and delivery of the Unions membership facing operations in commercial services, student activities, and the development of community and belonging at the University of West London;

2. Manage up to 20 staff, up to 100 student staff, and up to 1500 student volunteers; and overall responsibility for the development of student staff management practice;

3. Responsible for the development and support of 3 Sabbatical Officers with particular support for the VP Activities and Participation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Lead on the development and delivery of the Union’s membership facing operations in commercial services, student activities and the development of community and belonging at the University of West London

- Lead on developing, delivering, measuring and reporting the commercial and community & belonging elements of the Union’s strategy;

- Responsible for developing budgets and undertaking reforecasts in line with Strategy;

- Play a key role in liaison and negotiations with SU staff, UWL staff and other external parties in developing strategic opportunities for the Union;

- Develop proposals, reports, papers and business cases in discussion with the Chief Executive for discussion at senior level boards including the UWLSU Trustee Board and UWL Committees;

- Lead on the commercial and community & belonging systems and processes that enable UWLSU to enact the Strategy;

- Lead consultation with key stakeholders including students, UWLSU staff, UWL staff, NUS, SUs, and external organisations on commercial and community & belonging issues;

- Responsible for the strategy, operations and compliance of licensed food and beverage trading, the gym, Freshers, sport, societies, events, trips, and community social and co-curricular activity;

- Drive excellence in service and customer experience through surveys and feedback reviews in conjunction with the Commercial Manager and the Student Activities & Participation Manager;

- Responsible for ensuring procedures for incident and accident reporting are followed so that all records comply with legislation and the Union’s policies;

- Personal license holder for the Union ensuring high standards of customer safety is provided and all legislative requirements and policies are met;

- Responsible for driving income generation in commercial and community and belonging;

- Drive sales and targets through the setting of clear objectives, regular reviews and monitoring with the Commercial and Community & Belonging Team;

- Lead on research and evidence collection including; interpreting, commissioning and developing research in commercial and community & belonging;

2. Manage up to 20 staff, up to 100 student staff, and up to 1500 student volunteers; and overall responsibility for the development of student staff management practice

- Responsible for the recruitment and induction of staff in Commercial and Community & Belonging Areas;

- Manage staff in line with the policies and procedures of the Union;

- Lead the Commercial and Community & Belonging Teams by setting challenging targets and managing performance and outcomes in line with the strategic/operational plans of the Union;

- Invest in staff, and deliver our aims, by overseeing the induction, training, and development of your staff;

- Overall responsibility for the treatment and experience of student volunteers throughout the Union.


3. Responsible for the development and support of 3 Sabbatical Officers with particular support for the VP Activities and Participation.

- Support, advise and guide Sabbaticals ensuring induction, training, support and development of individuals is tailored to specific needs;

- Responsible for ensuring Officers are supported to represent the membership in dealings with UWL Committees, UWL staff, and external bodies – specific responsibility for academic committees;

- Specific responsibility for pastoral, developmental, strategic and operational support for the VP Activities & Participation.

Previous experience managing in either a charity or company generating income through sales Essential

Previous experience managing in either a charity or company with a food & beverage operation Essential
Previous experience managing in either a charity or company generating income through charitable grant funding, charitable donations, or individual investors Desirable 
Proven success leading the development and implementation of strategy and long-term targets Essential

Proven record of driving improvements in staff performance and organisational efficiency Desirable 
Practical experience of reporting at Board and sub-Board level Desirable
